Send InquiryThe navigation lock of Governolo brings us back to the period of Attila king of the Huns.
According to the tradition, this is the place where, in 452, the historic encounter took place between Attila and Pope Leo The Great, who managed to dissuade the former from continuing his invasion of the Italian peninsula...
Right in the centre of the village, where the river Mincio flew till the 1980s, there are the remains of the lock, probably built in 1190 by the engineer Alberto Pitentino, as part of the works to reorganise Mantua's lakes. Than under the Gonzaga government, first in 1394 and later in 1608, by the engineer Gabriele Bertazzolo, the lock was renewed in order to let ship sail along the river Mincio and to prevent that the river Po in flood could enter into the river Mincio.
